All Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education in Punjab have decided to introduce a new system for practical examinations, under which the written portion will be checked at the board level instead of examination centres.
Officials said the move aims to strengthen monitoring and bring uniformity to assessment after concerns emerged over unusually high practical marks in some cases despite weak theory performance.
Under the revised system, students appearing in practical exams of physics, chemistry, biology and computer science will now take a written test along with the experiment and viva voce.
A senior Lahore BISE official said the respective boards will collect the answer sheets and assign them to trained examiners for centralised marking. He said examiners at practical centres will only assess laboratory work, practical skills and oral performance.
Officials said the previous system allowed limited oversight, which led to complaints from students and teachers about inconsistent marking. They believe the new written assessment will also help boards review answer sheets more effectively if complaints are filed.
An education board official said the reform is meant to ensure that every candidate receives marks based on actual performance under a transparent and uniform system.
Education experts said the change could restore confidence in the examination process, especially in science subjects where practical marks play a key role in final grades.
Students, however, have called for clear guidelines and sample formats before the next examinations so they can better understand the revised pattern.
