Punjab Introduces New Law Against Child Begging

The Punjab government has introduced a new ordinance imposing stricter penalties on parents and guardians who force children into begging.

Under the Punjab Vagrancy Amendment Ordinance, 2026, parents and guardians found forcing children to beg could face up to three years in prison and a fine of Rs. 300,000.

The ordinance came into effect immediately after receiving approval from the provincial governor. It also expands the definition of a child to include 16-year-olds.

The government has also introduced administrative changes to strengthen efforts against begging across the province. Under the revised structure, the Director General of Social Welfare and Baitul Mal has been appointed as the Controller of Vagrancy.
