Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched the fourth phase of the Green Tractor Scheme through a digital balloting process, while also opening the application portal for the fifth phase as the provincial government plans to provide 19,500 tractors to farmers during the current fiscal year.
The digital balloting was conducted in the presence of the chief minister, with the first tractor under Phase IV awarded to Masood Khan, son of Lal Khan, from Attock.
Under Phase IV, 10,000 tractors with 50 to 65 horsepower will be provided with a subsidy of Rs. 750,000 per tractor. Under Phase V, the government will offer 9,500 tractors ranging from 75 to 125 horsepower with a subsidy of Rs. 1 million per tractor.
The Punjab government has allocated Rs. 17.6 billion for the Green Tractor Scheme. So far, 24,000 tractors have been provided to farmers under the program with a subsidy of Rs. 1 million per tractor.
More than 213,637 farmers applied for the Green Tractor Program, while 128,757 were declared eligible for the balloting after verification through the Punjab Land Records Authority and Nadra.
According to a briefing, 35,000 tractors have been distributed during Maryam Nawaz’s two and a half year tenure, compared with 10,000 tractors provided over the previous 20 years. Similarly, Rs. 20 billion has been spent on agricultural mechanization during the last two and a half years, compared with Rs. 3 billion over the previous two decades.
