Students and parents in Punjab are facing a shortage of Class 11 and 12 textbooks just days before higher secondary schools are scheduled to reopen on August 24.
According to sources, the shortage has been caused by limited allocation of textbooks to the market. During the first phase, publishers were allocated books equivalent to only around 30% of total market demand.
Around 30% of the allocated stock has already been sold, leaving several textbooks difficult to find in the market.
Publishers said additional textbooks have now been allocated according to market demand. However, booksellers reported that only some Class 11 textbooks are currently available, while Class 12 books are not available in the market at present.
The shortage has raised concerns among parents and students, particularly with only a few days remaining before the new academic session begins.
The Punjab Education Department said printing of the required textbooks is currently underway and the books are expected to reach the market within one to two days.
Officials have assured parents that 100% of the required textbooks will be available in the market by the time educational institutions reopen on August 24.
However, the short timeline has left parents and students concerned about whether the supply will be restored before classes begin.
