Punjab Exempts These Cars From Fitness Certificate Requirement
The Punjab Provincial Transport Authority has clarified the fitness certificate requirements for motor cars, with newer vehicles receiving exemptions based on their engine capacity and date of manufacture.
Under the latest notification, motor cars with engines up to 1,000cc require a fitness certificate five years after their date of manufacture. Cars with engines between 1,001cc and 2,000cc require a fitness certificate six years after their date of manufacture, while cars with engines above 2,000cc require one seven years after manufacture.
The notification states that the fitness certificate carries a validity period of one year. This means owners of cars within these categories do not need to obtain a fitness certificate before their respective age thresholds.
The clarification comes as Punjab prepares to enforce fitness certification requirements for vehicles that fall under the applicable rules. The Punjab Provincial Transport Authority announced on September 15 that vehicle owners would have 30 days to obtain valid fitness certificates before enforcement began.
The authority scheduled legal action from October 15 against vehicles operating without the required certification. Such vehicles could face heavy fines and other penalties under the enforcement measures.
Owners whose vehicles have reached the applicable age threshold can visit their nearest Provincial Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (PVICS) Centre to complete the fitness certification process.
