Punjab Deploys Special Units to Combat Smog

The Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has deployed 67 Quick Response Units (QRUs) across 10 hotspot districts to prevent stubble burning ahead of the smog season.

The units, equipped with tractor-mounted fire bowsers, have been stationed along major motorway routes to detect and extinguish crop-residue fires before they spread.

Punjab EPA Director General Abdullah Nayyer Sheikh conducted a surprise inspection of the units along the Gujranwala-Sialkot Motorway on Sunday to check their operational readiness.

During the visit, he found all units stationed at their designated locations with staff present and ready to respond to incidents of stubble burning.

The EPA chief also met with agriculture department officials to review coordination on monitoring rice-harvesting activities and identifying potential stubble-burning incidents.

Punjab EPA is using fire-anomaly detection, drone surveillance, and motorway patrolling to locate agricultural fires and dispatch response teams.

Over the past three days, these measures have been used to identify stubble-burning incidents and coordinate firefighting operations.

The initiative aims to ensure early detection and rapid response to crop-residue fires to reduce their impact on air quality during the smog season.
