Initial investigations into the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) fire incident have revealed that the hospital’s security staff did not know the fire brigade helpline number, leading to a 16-minute delay in contacting emergency responders.
According to the investigation, the fire broke out at 6:38 AM, but security personnel were seen asking others for the fire brigade’s contact number instead of immediately alerting the department.
The fire brigade was finally informed at 6:54 AM after PIMS security staff called the police emergency helpline, 15, and reported the fire. The police then contacted the fire brigade and passed on the information.
Islamabad Police have launched a criminal investigation into the incident and recorded statements from eight suspended PIMS officials, along with members of the medical, non-medical, technical, and security staff.
An inquiry committee is also expected to submit its final report within two days. The investigation will determine responsibility in the case, including the possible involvement of the PIMS executive director and the eight suspended officials.
The findings have also revealed that this was not the first time PIMS staff faced difficulty contacting fire brigade.
On July 6, a fire broke out at the PIMS nursing hostel at around 3 AM. At that time, hospital staff couldn’t contact the fire department immediately. A woman from the hospital eventually contacted the fire brigade at 4:12 AM.
