The Power Division has rejected a media report claiming that the government has entered into new long-term agreements with independent power producers (IPPs).
In a statement, the Power Division spokesperson said the report was not based on facts.
The spokesperson said the government had already ended the practice of entering into new IPP agreements or committing to purchase electricity from new IPPs under the Integrated Generation Capacity Expansion Plan (IGCEP) 2025-35 and the planned move toward a competitive electricity market.
The Power Division clarified that the Jamshoro Coal Power Plant is not an IPP. The plant was established by the Government of Pakistan with funding from the Asian Development Bank.
Construction of the plant started in 2018, while it achieved commercial operations in May 2025, according to the spokesperson.
The spokesperson said presenting the plant’s commercial operation date as a new IPP agreement was misleading and had created unnecessary controversy.
The Power Division also said the reporter who published the story did not seek clarification from either the Power Division or representatives of the Jamshoro power plant before publishing the report.
