Capital City Police Officer Bilal Siddique Kamyana has directed police to launch a comprehensive crackdown on individuals involved in altering the IMEI numbers of stolen mobile phones.
Kamyana issued the directives during a meeting that reviewed measures to curb organized mobile phone theft and strengthen surveillance at crime hotspots. The meeting discussed geofencing theft hotspots and increasing surveillance in these areas.
Officials also reviewed the use of human intelligence and modern technology to prevent and detect theft cases. Police will deploy additional personnel at crime hotspots, increase patrolling and conduct plainclothes decoy operations.
Kamyana directed officers to arrest individuals involved in pickpocketing and mobile phone theft and bring them to justice. He also ordered increased surveillance of pickpockets at crowded places, markets, public gatherings and public transport.
The meeting also decided to trace the wider network involved in stolen phones by backtracking recovered devices. Police will verify identification documents and transaction records and take strict action against the illegal purchase and sale of stolen phones and their spare parts.
