Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nominee Dr. Muhammad Najeeb Naqi has been elected president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) for a five-year term.
Naqi secured 32 votes in Thursday’s presidential election held at the AJK Legislative Assembly, defeating Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Chaudhry Latif Akbar, who received 13 votes. One Assembly member remained absent.
Of Naqi’s 32 votes, 31 came from PML-N lawmakers, while one vote was cast by a member of the Jammu Kashmir Awami Dast-o-Bazu (JKADB).
The presidential post had remained vacant since January following the death of Barrister Sultan Mahmood.
The 46-member AJK Assembly currently has 31 PML-N lawmakers and 14 PPP members, while the PML-N also has an alliance with one JKADB member.
Naqi previously served as AJK health minister from 2006 to 2011 and again from 2016 to 2021 under the PML-N government.
The PML-N won 25 seats in the recent AJK general elections, while the PPP secured 11. Its strength later rose to 31 after reserved-seat elections.
Earlier, PML-N leader Iftikhar Gilani was sworn in as AJK prime minister on August 28 after securing 30 votes against PPP candidate Sardar Mukhtar Khan’s 14.
