PMDC Reduces BDS Program Duration

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has announced that the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program will remain a four-year program, reversing its earlier decision to extend the program to five years.

PMDC officials informed the Senate Standing Committee on Health on Monday that the council had withdrawn its previous notification extending the duration of dental education.

The committee directed the PMDC to issue a formal notification confirming the four-year BDS program.

In November 2024, the PMDC had extended the BDS program from four to five years, with the change set to apply from the 2024-25 academic session. The decision followed recommendations from a committee of dental experts seeking to align Pakistan’s dental education standards with international practices.

The PMDC later postponed implementation of the five-year program for one year in January 2025. Private dental colleges had raised concerns about insufficient infrastructure, faculty and other logistical requirements for the additional year.
