The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed concern over the deteriorating quality of drinking water in Pakistan, warning that unsafe water continues to contribute to widespread waterborne diseases.
PMA Secretary General Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro cited a recent Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) report, which found 29 bottled water brands unsafe due to microbiological or chemical contamination.
The PMA questioned how companies supplying contaminated water were allowed to register and operate and why those responsible had not faced legal consequences.
The association called for immediate legal action, heavy fines and criminal prosecution against companies and individuals distributing contaminated or unregistered drinking water. The PMA also urged the government to improve public filtration plants and municipal water networks to provide safe tap water to households.
It called on regulatory bodies, including the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), to enforce continuous and transparent inspections of water filtration plants and commercial water suppliers.
The association urged federal and provincial governments to prioritize water purification and sanitation infrastructure to protect citizens from preventable diseases and reduce pressure on the healthcare system.
