Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken serious notice of senior Islamabad officials riding a ceremonial horse-drawn buggy during the August 14 Independence Day celebrations and ordered an immediate end to unnecessary displays of privilege by government officials.
The incident involved the Islamabad Chief Commissioner and Inspector General of Police (IGP), who rode in a horse-drawn buggy to attend and watch the official Independence Day event.
In a directive issued on August 20, the Establishment Division said the Prime Minister was disappointed by the incident, which drew widespread public criticism.
According to the directive, the Prime Minister said the display created an image of privilege and personal showmanship that was not appropriate for public servants.
The Prime Minister has directed that the growing culture of unnecessary display, personal publicity and showing off among civil servants and government officials be ended immediately.
The directive stressed that government officials hold public office in trust for citizens and must demonstrate humility, restraint, dignity and good judgment.
It warned that such displays can damage public confidence in government institutions and do not reflect the standards expected from senior officials.
The Establishment Division has asked all Federal Secretaries to ensure that the instructions are followed across their ministries, divisions, attached departments, subordinate offices and autonomous bodies.
The government has therefore directed officials to maintain simplicity and dignity at official events and avoid unnecessary displays of status or personal publicity.
