Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will meet Apple CEO John Ternus in the United States to discuss the company’s potential entry into Pakistan.
This meeting is expected to be arranged when the premier heads to Washington for a series of high-profile meetings likely in the coming months.
The development was shared by the Engineering Development Board (EDB) CEO on Thursday while briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication.
The official said Pakistan currently has 37 companies manufacturing mobile phones locally, which have produced more than 35 million handsets to date.
He said Apple is the only major smartphone company that does not currently manufacture phones in Pakistan, and the government is trying to attract the company to establish manufacturing or assembly operations in the country.
The EDB CEO added that the expected meeting between Shehbaz Sharif and Ternus in the US could form part of these efforts to bring Apple to Pakistan.
The committee chairman welcomed the expansion of local mobile-phone manufacturing but stressed that Pakistan needs to increase domestic production further.
He said locally made phones should be affordable and meet quality standards. He also called for greater focus on locally produced 4G and 5G devices instead of continuing with older 3G technology.
