PM Issues Final Warning Against FBR Corruption

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday warned that corrupt Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officers will have no place in the tax authority.

Chairing a weekly review meeting on FBR reforms on Monday, the prime minister directed officials to speed up the introduction of faceless systems in tax collection and improve transparency, accountability, training, and the use of technology.

PM said officers and staff who improve their conduct and performance should be given an opportunity to reform. However, those who continue corruption and poor performance will not be tolerated.

The meeting was told that Pakistan’s estimated tax gap had declined from 6 percent to 5 percent of gross domestic product over the past three years.

The appointment of 957 third-party auditors had increased FBR’s audit capacity fourfold.

The prime minister directed the tax authority to continue improving its capacity to address the tax gap and ensure that the ongoing reforms produce results.
