Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plans to launch direct flights to the Maldives after adding more aircraft to its fleet, the national carrier said on Wednesday.
The proposed route would provide direct air connectivity between Pakistan and the Maldives and could support tourism, trade and people-to-people exchanges.
However, PIA has tied the launch timeline to the availability of additional aircraft. PIA Chief Executive Officer Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Amir Hayat said the airline would start the Maldives service after inducting new aircraft into its fleet.
Officials discussed the proposal during a meeting at PIA’s head office with a Maldivian delegation led by National Assembly Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
Abdulla said direct flights could boost bilateral trade, tourism and people-to-people contacts while strengthening relations between Pakistan and the Maldives.
The proposal comes as PIA works to expand and modernize its fleet. Boeing is expected to submit a revised aircraft acquisition proposal to PIA after Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Boeing Global President Dr. Brendan Nelson recently held discussions.
The talks also covered options to secure earlier aircraft delivery slots and use interim leasing arrangements.
