Petroleum Minister Shipped Off to Karachi to Negotiate Cheaper Diesel With Refineries

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik to immediately travel to Karachi and negotiate with oil refineries to reduce the prices of locally produced diesel and provide relief to consumers.

The prime minister issued the directive during a meeting with the petroleum minister in Islamabad on Wednesday. Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik and MNA Hamza Shehbaz also attended the meeting.

Shehbaz directed the petroleum minister to personally hold and complete negotiations with the refineries as soon as possible to secure a reduction in diesel prices.

“Most of the diesel is produced locally by oil refineries,” the prime minister said, stressing that the government should take immediate measures to bring down the price of locally produced diesel.

He directed the petroleum minister to ensure that the necessary steps were taken through negotiations with the refineries and that the maximum possible relief was passed on to the public without delay.

The government’s move comes as diesel prices remain an important cost for transportation, agriculture and other economic activities. Any reduction in locally produced diesel prices could therefore provide relief to consumers as well as businesses facing high operating costs.
