Peshawar Private School Owner Blames Rainfall for Deadly Roof Collapse

The owner of a private school in Peshawar has attributed the building collapse that killed dozens of people to recent rainfall, while the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the tragedy.

School owner Khan Muhammad said construction of the building’s foundation began around 18 months ago and the area had received several days of rain before the incident.

According to Muhammad, a room on the second floor collapsed first, bringing down the rooms beneath it. He said around 30 children were present in the affected classroom at the time, while the school had a total enrolment of approximately 350 students.

The owner added that he called teachers to help evacuate the children following the collapse.

However, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Secretary Inayatullah Waseem said the building was in a dilapidated state. He added that the education department had not received any report regarding the structure’s condition before the incident.

Waseem said an inquiry committee had been established to determine what caused the building to collapse.

He further announced that the provincial government would inspect public and private educational institutions throughout KP to assess their condition and help prevent similar incidents. The government would also cover the medical expenses of children injured in the collapse.
