Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) in Peshawar has successfully performed a robotic-assisted knee replacement, which hospital officials described as the first such procedure at a public-sector hospital in Pakistan.
The surgery was carried out by Professor Dr. Muhammad Siraj, Professor Dr. Aul Hakeem and their team in the hospital’s Orthopedics Department.
Orthopedic surgeons from different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa observed the procedure through a live demonstration, providing an opportunity to learn about the surgical technique.
Officials said the achievement could create further opportunities for advanced orthopedic procedures in the province. They also highlighted its potential to support medical training, research and academic activities.
Khyber Medical College Dean Professor Dr. Mahmood Aurangzeb congratulated the department on completing the surgery and expressed pride in the team’s work.
The claim that it was Pakistan’s first robotic-assisted knee replacement at a public-sector hospital was attributed to hospital officials. The report did not provide details about the patient’s recovery, the equipment used or plans to make the procedure routinely available.
