A bridge constructed just six months ago over a drain near Nasir Bagh on Peshawar’s Northern Bypass has been swept away by a flood surge caused by monsoon rains.
A section of the connecting road was also damaged after the protective embankments around the bridge failed to withstand the pressure of floodwater.
The bridge is an important part of the Northern Bypass, which connects Hayatabad with Karkhano Market. Hundreds of employees, industrial workers and residents use the route daily, while motorists travelling between the motorway and Ring Road also rely on it.
The Northern Bypass had helped reduce traffic congestion in Peshawar. However, the bridge’s destruction has disrupted traffic and forced thousands of commuters to use alternative routes.
Residents said nearly three months have passed since the bridge was damaged, but rehabilitation work has yet to begin. They urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, Communications and Works Department, National Highway Authority and Peshawar Development Authority to urgently rebuild the damaged embankments and restore the route.
They also called for an investigation into the construction quality and action against those responsible if substandard work is found.
Authorities have yet to announce a timeline for the bridge’s reconstruction.
