Pakistan enjoyed a strong outing in squash at the Asian Games as Asim Khan and Mehwish Ali advanced to the mixed doubles quarterfinals, while Noor Zaman and Ashab Irfan secured their places in the men’s singles last eight.
Asim and Mehwish defeated Japan’s Naoki Hayashi and Arisa Sano in a closely contested Round of 16 encounter. The Pakistani duo started strongly with an 11-8 win in the opening game before edging the second 11-10.
The Japanese pair fought back in the next game, but Asim and Mehwish regained control and closed out the contest with an 11-4 win to seal their place in the quarterfinals.
Pakistan’s other mixed doubles pair, Nasir Iqbal and Sehrish Ali, were unable to progress after suffering defeat in their Round of 16 match.
Pakistan also enjoyed success in the men’s singles, where Noor Zaman produced a commanding performance against Kuwait’s Ammar Al-Tamimi.
Noor secured a comfortable 3-0 victory, winning 11-4, 11-9, 11-4 to move into the quarterfinals.
Ashab Irfan followed with another straight-games victory, defeating Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Al-Nasfan 11-9, 11-3, 11-5 in the Round of 16.
With Asim and Mehwish progressing in mixed doubles and Noor and Ashab reaching the men’s singles quarterfinals, Pakistan will look to continue its strong run in the squash competition at the Asian Games.
