How Much Does the Scholarship Pay?
The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation provides a monthly allowance throughout the minimum period required to complete the selected degree. Students enrolled in a one- or two-year degree receive ¥230,000 per month.
Those studying in a three-year degree receive ¥210,000 per month. Students enrolled in a four- or five-year degree receive ¥180,000 per month.
The Foundation determines the scholarship period according to the minimum time required to complete the degree. Scholarship recipients cannot change this period after payments begin.
The Foundation may also provide financial assistance to scholars attending international conferences under its rules.
Does the Scholarship Cover Tuition Fees?
The Honjo International Scholarship mainly provides monthly financial support and does not cover university tuition fees. It also does not cover initial travel expenses, including airfare to Japan.
Students should therefore consider tuition fees and initial travel costs separately when planning their studies.
Who Can Apply
Foreign students who currently study or plan to study for a Master’s or doctoral degree at a graduate school in Japan can apply. Pakistani students are eligible because the scholarship accepts non-Japanese citizens regardless of nationality.
Applicants from all research fields can apply. The scholarship accepts both students already enrolled at Japanese graduate schools and those planning to begin their graduate studies in 2027.
Japanese Language Requirement
Applicants must be able to hold a basic conversation in Japanese. The Foundation conducts scholarship interviews in Japanese and does not provide an exception to this requirement.
However, the interview does not primarily test advanced Japanese-language proficiency. Applicants should be able to explain themselves and discuss their research in basic Japanese.
The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation does not list IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, or a fixed GPA of 3.0 as general scholarship eligibility requirements.
Individual Japanese universities may have their own academic and language requirements for admission.
Other Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must show a strong commitment to contributing to their home country through their future careers. They must also understand and support the Foundation’s goal of promoting international friendship and goodwill.
Successful scholars must participate in events organised by the Foundation and remain involved in its alumni network after completing their studies.
Students enrolled in professional graduate schools are generally not eligible. However, such students may apply if they can submit an appropriate research plan.
Documents Required
Applicants must submit their applications through the Foundation’s online application system. They need to provide academic transcripts from their undergraduate studies. Applicants already studying at graduate level may also submit their graduate school transcripts.
Documents must be in Japanese or English. Applicants must provide a translation if their documents are issued in another language. Applicants also need to submit a research proposal using the Foundation’s designated format.
The proposal should explain the research topic, research schedule, and final objective. It should also explain how the applicant plans to use knowledge gained in Japan to contribute to their home country.
Recommendation Letter
Applicants must provide a recommendation letter from a supervisor. The letter should discuss the candidate’s academic performance, personality, and future potential.
Applicants may also obtain the recommendation from a previous academic supervisor in their home country if that person understands their academic background.
The Foundation does not prescribe a specific format or page limit for the recommendation letter. If a referee sends the recommendation directly to the Foundation, it must arrive by 31 October 2026.
Admission Documents
Applicants who have already received admission to a Japanese graduate school should provide an admission or acceptance letter. Students who are already enrolled should submit a certificate of enrolment.
Applicants who have not received their admission results by 31 October 2026 can enter their expected result date in the application system and provide the document later when it becomes available.
How to Apply
Applicants must apply through the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation’s online application system.
They need to complete the application form and upload all required documents, including academic records, a research proposal, recommendation documents, and the mandatory research video.
After applicants complete the application, the system generates an application number and a PDF copy of the submitted form.
Applicants should keep their application number because the Foundation uses these numbers when announcing screening results.
Students do not need nomination or pre-selection from their university. They can apply directly to the Honjo International Scholarship Foundation.
