What the Assistantship Covers

Research and Herbarium Work

Much of the work will involve specimen preparation, integration, backlog processing, and digitization. The student will also help complete the digitization of the herbarium collection.
Research work can lead to a master’s thesis in areas such as floristics, invasive plant species, rare plant species, conservation, herbarium studies, and specimen digitization.
The position also includes major responsibilities for the 73rd annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, including event organization, operations, and report writing.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in a related field and an undergraduate GPA above 3.0.
A background in botany is also required. Candidates should have completed at least one undergraduate botany course or other relevant training, or show strong evidence of botanical experience. Good communication skills and a strong work ethic are also required.
Previous professional experience is not required for the position. Applicants with knowledge of Symbiota/SERNEC portals, basic R or Python skills, and experience working with researchers, conservation workers, or the public will be strongly preferred.
Opportunities for Master’s Students
This assistantship gives students practical experience alongside their graduate studies. They will work directly with a large herbarium collection and gain experience in plant specimen management, digitization, botanical research, and conservation-related work.
