What Does the Studentship Cover
The successful candidate will receive a tax-free stipend based on UCL’s doctoral funding rate.
For the 2026-27 academic year, the stipend amounts to around £23,805 per year, equivalent to approximately £1,983.75 per month.
The funding also covers tuition fees for the successful applicant, including an international student selected for the studentship.
The package includes additional research training support and funding for a laptop required for the project.
What is the PhD Research About
The project examines how healthcare, social care and education services can better support children and young people with complex health needs.
The selected researcher will use System Dynamics simulation modelling to study important transitions in children’s lives.
These include moving from hospital care back home, entering school, and moving from primary to secondary education.
The research will examine how different services interact and identify factors that can improve support for children and their families.
About the SPROCKET Hub
The research forms part of the SPROCKET Hub, which focuses on Systems and Process Redesign and Optimization at Childhood Key Events and Transitions.
The hub brings together specialists from different fields, including operational research, systems thinking, health services research, clinical paediatrics, education, implementation science, disability interventions and family experience.
The project therefore offers the selected PhD student an opportunity to work across several disciplines.
Mathematics Background
Candidates should have a strong quantitative or mathematical background. Relevant areas may include mathematics, operational research, mathematical modelling, System Dynamics or related quantitative disciplines.
The studentship also includes teaching assistant responsibilities in UCL’s Department of Mathematics.
Applicants therefore need sufficient mathematics in their previous academic studies to undertake teaching duties.
English Language Requirements
| English Test | Requirement |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component |
| TOEFL iBT taken before 21 January 2026 | 92 overall with required component scores |
| TOEFL from 21 January 2026 onward | 4.5 overall with at least 4.0 in each component |

Teaching and Professional Development
The selected student will undertake teaching assistant duties alongside their doctoral research. UCL provides training and professional development opportunities for teaching assistants.
The role can help the successful applicant develop teaching, communication, and academic skills during the PhD.
Research Proposal
Applicants do not need to prepare a separate detailed independent research proposal for this studentship.
Instead, they should explain why they want to work on the SPROCKET project and why they want to pursue a PhD.
Candidates should also describe the academic qualifications, quantitative skills, research experience, and other relevant experience they can bring to the project.
How to Apply
Interested candidates must apply through UCL’s postgraduate application system. Applicants should select Research Degree: Mathematics and use the relevant Mathematics research degree code.
They should identify Sonya Crowe, Christina Pagel and Nici Zimmermann as prospective supervisors and clearly state that they are applying for the System Dynamics Modelling of Services for Children With Complex Health Needs project.
Candidates should complete all required sections of the application, upload their academic documents, and arrange for two references before submission.
