A 37-year-old Pakistani man has been charged with allegedly attempting to traffic a woman and her two young children out of Australia using threats and coercion.
The man appeared before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the woman and children were known to him.
Investigators began examining the case on June 10 after receiving information from a member of the public. Authorities located the group before their planned departure from Melbourne Airport and separated the woman and children from the suspect.
Police allege he threatened the woman to secure her compliance with proposed travel from Australia to Pakistan.
Officers executed search warrants in Melbourne’s Glenroy suburb on October 9, seizing a mobile phone, laptop, and documents for forensic examination.
The man was charged with organizing another person’s proposed departure from Australia through coercion, threats, or deception and obtaining their compliance. The offense carries a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.
AFP Detective Superintendent Ray Imbriano said timely information and coordination with community partners allowed investigators to intervene before the alleged trafficking occurred.
He urged anyone concerned about possible human trafficking to contact authorities, noting that victims can be isolated or intimidated into believing they have no choice.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
