Pakistani-American Artist Named on TIME’s List of 100 Most Influential Art Figures

Pakistani-American artist Salman Toor has been named on TIME Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people shaping the future of art. The TIME100 Art 2026 list was released on Friday.

Toor, 42, was featured in the Icons section of the list, which recognizes painters, photographers, sculptors and other artists, as well as curators, lawyers, philanthropists and museum leaders who help bring artwork to the world.

The magazine described his work as paintings of “young brown men in states of convergence and of isolation” set in different environments.

It noted that since his breakthrough show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 2020, his paintings have sold at auction for more than $1 million, his solo exhibition has toured four museums, he has participated in the Venice Biennale, and a two-part gallery show of his work sold out.

His first solo European exhibition, the publication added, will open at the Courtauld Gallery in London in October.

This is not the first time Toor has been recognized by TIME. He was named on the TIME100 Next list in 2021. The artist was born in Lahore and now lives in New York City.
