The federal government has decided to further strengthen the legal framework governing social media platforms in Pakistan amid concerns over child exploitation, obscene content and other online offences, sources told ProPakistani.
Several proposals are under consideration, including introducing a minimum age requirement for social media users and restricting obscene content being shared under the guise of vlogging and other digital activities.
The Ministry of Interior will consult relevant stakeholders before preparing its final recommendations. The consultation process is expected to involve federal and provincial authorities, law enforcement agencies and other institutions concerned with online safety.
Police departments from all provinces have submitted reports to the Ministry of Interior regarding the increasing number of cases involving child exploitation, obscenity and social media-related crimes.
According to sources, the reports will be reviewed while formulating measures to regulate online platforms more effectively.
The government will also examine social media regulations adopted by countries including Australia and the United Kingdom.
Cases of child exploitation and obscene online content reported in Pakistan will be assessed to determine the legal and regulatory changes required to prevent such offences.
