Pakistan Seeks Egypt’s Expertise to Boost Cotton Production

Pakistan is seeking Egypt’s technical expertise to increase cotton yields and improve fiber quality as the government looks to strengthen agricultural productivity and reduce production costs.

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain sought Egypt’s support during a meeting with Egyptian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Ihab Mohamed Abdelhamid Hassan, according to an official statement.

Hussain said Pakistan could benefit from Egypt’s experience in cotton varieties, quality seed, crop management and value addition. He also highlighted Egypt’s progress in modern agriculture, water management, climate resilient farming and agricultural technologies.

The minister proposed closer cooperation between agricultural research institutions in the two countries, including expert exchanges, joint research, capacity building, field trials and the sharing of agricultural practices.

The proposed cooperation extends beyond cotton. Pakistan also wants to work with Egypt on water efficient irrigation, seed development, biotechnology, climate smart agriculture, mechanization, livestock, horticulture and agricultural research.

The initiative comes as Pakistan’s cotton sector continues to face productivity challenges. Cotton production has remained vulnerable to weather conditions, pest pressures, declining cultivated area and weak access to quality seed and modern production technologies, making improvements in farm productivity increasingly important for the country’s textile based economy.

Hussain said the government is focused on increasing agricultural productivity, lowering farmers’ production costs and improving farm incomes through modern technology, quality inputs and stronger links between research institutions and agricultural extension services.

The Egyptian ambassador welcomed greater agricultural cooperation and highlighted Egypt’s experience in cotton production, irrigation, agricultural research and farming in water scarce and arid conditions. He said Egyptian institutions would be encouraged to identify areas where the two countries could work together.

Both sides agreed to maintain coordination and identify specific areas for cooperation that could deliver practical benefits for farmers, agricultural productivity and food security. The two countries have previously explored collaboration in areas including water resource management, arid zone farming, seed development, drip irrigation and climate smart agriculture.
