Pakistan Railways has signed a freight forwarding agreement with Russian Railways Logistics, known as RZD Logistics, to expand cooperation in international freight transportation and multimodal logistics services, as the two countries seek to strengthen rail links and trade connectivity.
Under the agreement, Pakistan and Russia will work toward launching a pilot container freight train connecting Pakistan with Russia and Central Asian countries. The service is intended to promote rail based trade and provide an additional route for moving goods across the region.
The pilot train could not begin as originally planned because of the regional conflict, according to the government. Pakistan Railways and RZD Logistics remain in contact and plan to launch the service once conditions allow.
The initiative is part of Pakistan’s broader efforts to expand the role of railways in international trade and improve connections with regional markets. A freight corridor linking Pakistan with Russia and Central Asia could provide exporters and importers with an alternative to existing transport routes and support greater use of multimodal logistics.
The cooperation will also cover the exchange of technical expertise and best practices in railway freight operations. The government said this could help improve international freight services, reduce logistics costs and strengthen the efficiency of Pakistan’s rail freight network.
For Pakistan Railways, expanding international freight services could also support efforts to improve its financial sustainability while modernizing its operations.
The government said deeper integration with regional and international trade routes could increase freight activity and strengthen the railway’s role in cross border commerce.
