Pakistan has finalized plans to host the 14th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games from April 4 to 11, 2027, in coordination with the South Asian Olympic Council.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting of the Steering Committee on preparations for the Games, which will be held across Islamabad, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The SAF Games are a major regional multi-sport competition that has been held since 1984 under the South Asian Olympic Council. Participating countries include Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
The upcoming event will be the 14th edition of the Games. The previous edition was held in Nepal in 2019, where India finished as the top-performing nation. The 14th Games were originally scheduled for 2021 but were postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic and later faced another delay in January 2026.
A total of 28 sports will be contested at the 2027 Games, with more than 6,000 athletes and officials expected to participate. The program will include athletics, swimming, hockey, football, volleyball, boxing and other team sports.
The Steering Committee also approved the appointment of a National Coordinator and the formation of the Steering, Organizing and Provincial Committees for the Games.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister’s Adviser on Inter-Provincial Coordination Tariq Bajwa, the IPC secretary, representatives of provincial governments and senior federal and provincial officials.
Dar directed all relevant government departments and institutions to maintain close coordination, ensure the timely completion of venues, and uphold the highest administrative standards for the successful organization of the Games.
He also directed that the Steering Committee meet every month to review progress and monitor preparations for the event.
