OpenAI Slashes GPT-5.6 Sol API Prices for Three Months

OpenAI has cut developer pricing for its flagship GPT-5.6 Sol model by more than 20% for the next three months, as competition intensifies from Anthropic and Chinese AI companies.

The promotional pricing is already available through the OpenAI API and is rolling out to eligible plans for ChatGPT Work and Codex credits. OpenAI announced the change on August 21.

GPT-5.6 Sol Gets Cheaper

For standard short-context API usage, GPT-5.6 Sol now costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens.

Previously, OpenAI charged $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens. This means input pricing has fallen 20%, while output pricing has dropped by about 33%.

GPT-5.6 Sol Previous Price New Price
Input / 1M tokens $5 $4
Output / 1M tokens $30 $20

The change applies to developer and credit-based usage. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business subscription prices remain unchanged.

OpenAI Steps Up AI Price War

The move follows another round of price cuts in late July. OpenAI reduced pricing for its mid-range GPT-5.6 Terra by 20% and cut the price of its cheaper GPT-5.6 Luna by 80%.

The latest reduction also makes Sol cheaper than Anthropic’s competing frontier models on listed token prices.

Anthropic charges $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens for Claude Fable 5. Claude Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.

OpenAI has described the Sol reduction as temporary, with the promotional pricing scheduled to remain available for the next three months.
