Google has added Android Desktop Mode to the Pixel 8 and newer Pixel phones through the Android 16 March Pixel Drop, allowing supported devices to provide a PC-like interface when connected to an external monitor, Engadget reported.
Since this feature is part of the base Android experience, it will most likely reach other Android phones in the future as well. Google has not announced when Desktop Mode will become available on non-Pixel Android devices
The feature arrives after years of attempts by smartphone makers to turn phones into desktop replacements. Earlier examples included Asus’ PadFone, Motorola’s Atrix Lapdock, Microsoft Continuum, Samsung DeX and Motorola Smart Connect.

How Android Desktop Mode Works
Users can connect a Pixel 8 or newer Google phone to an external monitor with a high-speed USB-C cable.
A prompt then asks whether to mirror the phone’s display or switch to Desktop Mode. Selecting Desktop Mode opens a desktop-style workspace, while keyboards and mice can be connected through Bluetooth or a USB hub.
Apps open inside resizable windows, while a Start menu provides access to the App Drawer. Notifications remain available by pulling down from the top of the interface.
ZDNet reported that Desktop Mode ran smoothly while handling multiple applications.
Desktop Mode also remembers the active window arrangement when the phone is disconnected and later reconnected, provided those apps were not closed on the phone.
Apps cannot currently be pinned directly to the desktop home screen and must instead be opened from the Start menu.
Most Android games are designed around touchscreen controls and do not support keyboard input. However, content creator leepspvideo demonstrated Steam games running through Desktop Mode using tools such as GameNative.
The Limitations
The experience currently depends heavily on the workload.
Basic tasks such as document editing and watching YouTube videos can run smoothly, but more demanding activities such as photo editing may cause problems.
How-To Geek found that the software currently limits output to 60Hz, while Reddit users reported a lack of 4K resolution support.

Desktop Mode also does not support Chrome extensions, meaning tools such as Grammarly and OneTab cannot work as they do on traditional desktop versions of Chrome.
Android Police reported that a Pixel phone became hot to the touch after around 30 minutes of light Desktop Mode use.
Running a desktop interface with several floating windows also places greater strain on the phone, which could increase battery wear during extended sessions.
Despite these limitations, Android Desktop Mode gives newer Pixel phones a built-in way to provide a desktop-style workspace through an external display. Since the feature is relatively new, it could be improved later on with future software updates. Other Android phone makers may also come up with their own versions with better implementation.
