Norwegian FM’s Simple Arrival in Pakistan Sparks VIP Protocol Debate

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has gone viral in Pakistan after arriving in Islamabad on a commercial flight and carrying his own luggage, prompting comparisons with the country’s VIP protocol culture.

Videos and photographs circulating on social media show Eide walking through Islamabad International Airport while pulling a wheeled suitcase himself.

There was no large entourage or elaborate reception visible around him. Several Pakistani social media users highlighted the simplicity of his arrival and contrasted it with how politicians are often perceived to travel in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed that Additional Foreign Secretary for Europe Ambassador Ayesha Ali officially received the Norwegian minister at the airport.

The scenes attracted attention because official travel by senior Pakistani politicians commonly involves government vehicles, staff and security arrangements. Pakistan’s Cabinet Division maintains official rules covering staff cars, while separate government policies cover salaries, allowances and privileges for federal ministers and ministers of state.

Pakistan has also witnessed a long-running public debate over VIP culture and large motorcades. Previous controversies involving political leaders have led to criticism over the number of vehicles, security personnel and disruption associated with their movements.

First Norwegian Foreign Minister Visit in a Decade

Eide arrived on August 13 for a two-day official visit, the first by a Norwegian foreign minister to Pakistan in a decade. Norway said the visit would focus on bilateral relations, developments in the Middle East and other international issues.

During the visit, Eide held talks with Pakistani officials and also met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Both sides discussed trade, investment, climate resilience, technology and regional developments.

Yet on Pakistani social media, it was his arrival rather than the diplomatic meetings that generated much of the attention. A foreign minister pulling his own suitcase through the airport became an unexpected talking point about simplicity in public office and Pakistan’s enduring debate over VIP protocol.
