The engine of the Jinnah People’s Train derailed in Kuchlak, near Quetta, just a week after the service’s inauguration, with Pakistan Railway officials and police sources giving conflicting accounts of the cause.
According to railway authorities, the incident occurred in the yard of Kuchlak Railway Station. No casualties were reported, and the engine was subsequently returned to the track.
Officials said an investigation was underway to determine what caused the derailment. Their initial account suggested that fishplates, which connect sections of railway track, had been stolen from the yard.
However, police sources disputed the theft claim, saying worn-out railway sleepers were responsible for the incident. Sleepers support the rails and help keep the track in position.
Work to replace sleepers on the affected track began after the derailment, according to police sources.
Approximately Rs. 3 billion has been spent on the Jinnah People’s Train project. The incident occurred shortly after its launch, but the exact cause remains unresolved amid the differing accounts.
The report did not specify whether the derailment disrupted passenger services or how long the engine remained off the track.
