New Solar Panel Tech Can Charge Any EV On the Go

An electric vehicle owner says a rooftop solar charging system has provided all of his vehicle charging for the past two weeks, adding around 15 to 20 miles of range per day.

Michael Apple demonstrated the GoSun EV Solar Charger at the Montgomery Farmers Market while appearing with the New Jersey Electric Vehicle Association.

Solar Output Reached 1,054W

Apple said GoSun rates the system for a maximum output of 1,100W, while the highest output he has recorded so far is around 1,054W.

That puts his real-world peak close to the manufacturer’s advertised figure.

GoSun says the system can produce up to 1,100W of solar output when deployed and can add up to 20 miles of EV range per day under suitable conditions.

Panels Fold Onto the Roof

The solar panels fold into a compact enclosure mounted on the vehicle’s roof when they are not being used at full size.

When the vehicle is parked, the panels can be unfolded to create a much larger solar array.

Apple said he also found that the system continues generating power while folded inside the rooftop enclosure. That means it can charge the included power station while the vehicle is being driven.

GoSun says the system can produce around 200W continuously when closed.

Solar Energy Passes Through a Battery

The charger does not send changing solar output directly into the vehicle.

GoSun uses a 2,400Wh lithium iron phosphate battery to store energy from the panels before an inverter supplies power for Level 1 EV charging.

The system is designed to remain mounted on a vehicle’s roof and works with compatible roof crossbars.

Two Weeks of Solar Charging

Apple said he had been using the charger for around two weeks and had been pleased with its performance.

During that period, he said the system supplied all of his charging needs while providing roughly 15 to 20 miles of additional driving range each day.

GoSun lists the EV Solar Charger at $3,999.
