Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic republic of Britain” during a lengthy interview with Army Radio.
Netanyahu made the remark while discussing Britain’s historical relationship with Israel and the media coverage surrounding the 1967 Six-Day War.
During the interview, Netanyahu spoke about Randolph Churchill, the son of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Winston Spencer Churchill, his grandson. Both men worked as journalists, following a tradition also associated with the wartime British leader.
Netanyahu said Randolph Churchill and Winston Spencer Churchill traveled to Israel and reported positively on the Six-Day War.
He then contrasted their reporting with attitudes toward Israel in Britain today.
“Try to find that now in Britain, which you could call the Islamic republic of Britain,” Netanyahu said before chuckling.
The interviewer then asked whether all of Europe had already become similar. Netanyahu replied, “Yes.”
His response appeared to refer to Muslim communities across European countries as well as the increasingly critical positions that several European governments have taken toward Israel in recent years.
Netanyahu continued the exchange with another joke about Britain.
“The first nuclear Islamic republic will be the Islamic republic of Britain,” he said. He then added that Israel was making sure there would not be another nuclear Islamic republic in Iran.
Netanyahu’s comments come as relations between Israel and several European countries have faced growing strain over their policies toward Israel.
