Government schools across Lahore and several other districts of Punjab are facing serious shortages of basic facilities, including toilets, furniture, sanitation, and teaching staff, according to a report by the Program Monitoring Unit (PMU).
The report shows that furniture shortages are particularly severe in Bhakkar, where 48% of government schools lack adequate furniture. Jhang follows at 45%, Dera Ghazi Khan at 37%, Chiniot at 35%, Gujranwala at 34%, Muzaffargarh at 33%, Layyah at 29%, and Sahiwal at 28%.
A large number of schools also lack toilet facilities. Dera Ghazi Khan recorded the highest proportion at 45%, followed by Multan at 36%, Hafizabad at 33%, Bhakkar at 32%, and Bahawalnagar at 31%.
Meanwhile, 29% of government schools in Mianwali, Rahim Yar Khan, and Gujranwala do not have toilets. In Lahore, 27% of government schools were also found to be without the facility.
The report also raised concerns over poor sanitation. Garbage and waste were found at 30% of government schools in Wazirabad, while inadequate cleanliness arrangements were reported at 24% of schools in Gujranwala and Lodhran and 22% in Chiniot and Lahore.
Teacher absenteeism was another issue highlighted in the report. Murree recorded the highest rate, with teachers absent from 14% of schools, followed by Jhang at 11%.
The absenteeism rate stood at 10% in Bahawalpur, Okara, Wazirabad, and Rajanpur. The report also recorded a 9% rate in Hafizabad, Muzaffargarh, and Chakwal.
