NADRA Clarifies Myth About CNIC’s Last Digit

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has clarified that the last digit of a Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) number does not reveal a citizen’s gender.

NADRA addressed misinformation circulating on social media platforms, including Wikipedia and Facebook, claiming that odd-numbered CNICs belong to men while even-numbered CNICs belong to women.

According to NADRA, the last digit is a check digit calculated using a specific technical and mathematical method to help verify the validity of the identification number. It does not indicate a citizen’s gender or other personal information.

A citizen’s gender is explicitly mentioned on the CNIC in both Urdu and English. NADRA said it had previously issued a public clarification through newspapers on December 4, 2022, in light of the Peshawar High Court’s orders in Writ Petition No. P-40/2021.

The authority urged citizens and public and private institutions not to rely on unverified information circulating on social media. It advised them to use the official information printed on the CNIC when determining a citizen’s gender.
