A National Assembly committee has raised serious concern over Pakistan’s continued trade deficit with China and other free trade agreement partners and called for a detailed review of the factors behind the imbalance.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce directed the Ministry of Commerce to provide detailed reports on Pakistan’s trade deficit with China, Malaysia and Indonesia as it reviewed the country’s trade policy and export performance.
The committee also sought information on the Saindak project and Pakistan’s mineral exports to assess whether the country is receiving an adequate economic return from its mineral resources.
Members reviewed tariff reforms, export promotion measures, the performance of key trade related institutions and Pakistan’s trade relations with major trading partners.
The committee was also briefed on the proposed GSP+ scheme expected to begin on January 1, 2027. The Ministry of Commerce was directed to provide a detailed briefing on Pakistan’s preparedness, including the opportunities, challenges and steps needed to maximize the benefits of the scheme.
The committee also called for detailed presentations and reports on the Export Development Fund, GSP+, trade deficits with China, Malaysia and Indonesia, and mineral exports.
