More Than 21,000 Pakistanis Are in Jails Across 72 Countries

A total of 21,647 Pakistani citizens are in prisons across 72 countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the National Assembly in a written response.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar shared the figures during Question Hour. The reply addressed a question about Pakistani nationals held in foreign jails.

The United Arab Emirates has the largest number of Pakistani prisoners, with 5,297 held in its jails. Saudi Arabia follows with 4,775 Pakistani nationals in prisons across the country. Meanwhile, Indian prisons hold 738 Pakistanis, according to the ministry’s response.

The Foreign Ministry said courts abroad have sentenced 8,569 of the detained Pakistanis. More than 13,000 others are still facing trial in various countries.

The cases involve a range of charges, including drug trafficking, fraud, human trafficking and the use of forged documents.

However, the ministry did not release a country-by-country breakdown showing how many Pakistanis face each type of charge.
