Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Rizwan has challenged a summons issued to him by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in the Lahore High Court.
Rizwan and fellow Pakistan cricketer Imam-ul-Haq have been summoned by the NCCIA as part of an inquiry into alleged online betting and gambling activities.
In his petition, Rizwan questioned the NCCIA’s jurisdiction and the nature of the investigation. He also asked the court to suspend the agency’s proceedings until a final decision on his petition.
Rizwan claimed that the NCCIA did not specify any particular allegation against him in its notice. According to his petition, the notice stated that the inquiry concerned online betting and gambling but did not identify any specific activity in which he was allegedly involved.
The cricketer further stated that he repeatedly asked officials during his appearance to explain the allegations and identify the alleged illegal activity, but his questions were not answered.
Rizwan has therefore questioned why the NCCIA is investigating an unspecified allegation and asked the Lahore High Court to halt the proceedings until his petition is decided.
The NCCIA had also issued questionnaires to Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq, requiring them to submit their responses by September 15. Imam has submitted his response, while Rizwan has challenged the summons in court.
Both cricketers were recently recalled from Pakistan’s tour of England, after which the NCCIA inquiry was initiated.
