Meta has unveiled a new pair of VR glasses priced at $1,299 that weigh just around 100 grams. Gurman shared details of the device in a post on X, highlighting that Meta achieved the lightweight design by moving the battery and computing hardware into an external pack.
Meta’s new VR glasses aim to deliver a high-end mixed-reality experience while addressing one of the biggest issues with current VR headsets: weight and comfort. During a demonstration, Gurman noted that the device came close to the Apple Vision Pro experience while costing less than half the price and weighing around one-sixth as much.
Lightweight Design With External Hardware
Instead of placing all components inside the headset, Meta moved the battery, storage, and computing hardware into a connected external device.
This approach allows the glasses themselves to remain much lighter. Meta says the device weighs about 100 grams, which is significantly below the weight of existing mixed-reality headsets such as the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3.
The company believes reducing weight is one of the biggest challenges in making VR and mixed-reality devices suitable for everyday use.

Vision Pro Rival
Meta is positioning the new glasses against premium spatial computing devices, including Apple’s Vision Pro.
During demonstrations, the device showed features focused on large virtual displays, productivity workflows, entertainment, and gaming. Some early hands-on impressions described the experience as approaching Vision Pro-like capabilities while being much lighter and less expensive.
The Meta VR Glasses are priced at less than half the cost of Apple’s Vision Pro, which launched as a high-end spatial computing device.
Focus on Productivity and Entertainment
Meta demonstrated the glasses running multiple virtual screens for work, allowing users to interact with digital content in their surroundings.
The device is also aimed at entertainment use cases, including watching movies and immersive gaming experiences.
Meta sees lightweight mixed-reality glasses as a future computing platform that could eventually replace traditional screens for some tasks.

Meta has announced the VR Glasses for $1,299.
The company is expected to make the device available in spring 2027.
