The National Assembly was informed that Pakistan has around 22,000 medical college seats, with 65% in private institutions and 35% in government colleges.
Federal Minister for National Health Services Syed Mustafa Kamal said private medical colleges cannot charge more than Rs. 2.1 million in annual fees and cannot increase their fees independently.
Parliamentary Secretary Nelson Azeem said the government initially fixed the fee at Rs. 1.8 million, but 61 medical colleges appealed the decision. After reviewing their cases, the relevant committee allowed 35 institutions to charge up to Rs. 2.1 million based on their facilities and expenses.
The government has also established a complaint portal for students and parents. Azeem said authorities had issued notices to 45 institutions and would take action against colleges that failed to justify their fees or meet tax requirements.
Meanwhile, Mustafa Kamal said that limited seats have pushed many Pakistani students to seek medical education abroad, with the country spending around $800 million annually on foreign medical education. The government has imposed a three year moratorium on new private medical colleges, while government institutions continue to increase seats by expanding their infrastructure.
