The Imam of Masjid Al-Haram and Saudi Arabia’s President of Religious Affairs, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais has warned Muslims against celebrating Mawlid, saying the practice is not part of the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) or the practices of his companions.
Al-Sudais reportedly delivered the remarks from Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah on August 18, 2026, as discussions around Mawlid celebrations intensify ahead of Rabi-ul-Awwal 12, traditionally observed by many Muslims as the Prophet’s (PBUH) birth anniversary. Recent social media posts and video clips of the sermon have circulated widely online.
According to the remarks being shared, Al-Sudais described the celebration of Mawlid as an innovation, arguing that it was not observed during the lifetime of the Prophet (PBUH), by his companions or during the early generations of Islam.
The issue remains a matter of longstanding religious disagreement, with Muslim scholars and communities holding different views about commemorating the Prophet’s birth.
The timing of Al-Sudais’ remarks is significant as Rabi-ul-Awwal is currently underway. According to an Islamic calendar for 2026, Rabi-ul-Awwal 12 falls on August 25 this year.
