The head of military intelligence for the eastern Libyan National Army (LNA), Fawzi Al-Mansouri, was killed in a bomb blast in Benghazi.
According to news agency reports, Al-Mansouri was killed when an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted his vehicle outside his home in the Hawari area of Benghazi.
Local authorities did not immediately identify those behind the attack or provide further details about the explosive device.
The bombing highlights the continuing security challenges facing Libya, where rival administrations and armed groups continue to maintain influence despite a 2020 ceasefire that brought an end to major fighting.
Libya has remained divided between rival eastern and western factions since 2014, following the 2011 uprising that ended the rule of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
The LNA, led by military commander Khalifa Haftar, controls much of eastern and southern Libya and is aligned with authorities based in Benghazi.
The internationally recognized government is based in the capital, Tripoli, and maintains control over large parts of western Libya.
