Leaked DLSS 5 Build Is Turning Game Characters Into Nightmares

An unfinished version of Nvidia DLSS 5 has leaked online, allowing modders to run the neural rendering technology in several games and revealing some unusual results.

The leaked build was reportedly found inside the early access version of NBA 2K27. Modders identified a file called nvngx_dlssnr.dll as version 310.8.0.0 of Nvidia DLSSNR, which contains an unreleased DLSS 5 Neural Rendering runtime.

The RenoDX modding community quickly began experimenting with the technology and managed to get DLSS 5 running in Control.

Since then, modders have also enabled it in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

DLSS 5 Can Change More Than Image Quality

Nvidia introduced DLSS 5 earlier this year as a major expansion of its AI-based rendering technology.

Unlike traditional upscaling, the system can use generative AI to alter how parts of a game scene actually look.

That approach immediately caused controversy. Some players described the effect as a “yassification filter,” while others criticized it as AI-generated visual content.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang later rejected those criticisms, saying gamers were “completely wrong” about the technology.

The leaked build now gives modders an early opportunity to see how the system behaves in existing games. Results vary significantly.

In Control, environmental improvements can look relatively convincing, particularly when DLSS 5 adds additional detail to scenes.

Character rendering is much less consistent.

In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Cloud can look noticeably different from his original design, while CJ in GTA: San Andreas takes on a particularly unusual appearance.

DLSS 5 can also change the overall visual style of games. Tests in Skyrim, for example, show the technology significantly altering the game’s original atmosphere.

Performance Takes a Major Hit

The unfinished DLSS 5 build is also extremely demanding.

One modder in the RenoDX Discord community reported an almost 50% performance loss while using the leaked version.

That could change considerably before release, as the current runtime was never intended for public use.

The examples also involve games that were not designed around DLSS 5, which means titles developed specifically for the technology may produce much better results.

For now, the leak offers only an early look at Nvidia’s next generation of neural rendering.

Whether the final version retains these dramatic visual changes remains unclear, but the leaked build shows that DLSS 5 could have a much larger effect on game graphics than previous versions of DLSS.
