The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is moving to expand MRI and CT scan services at government hospitals through a public-private partnership, with the Health Foundation tasked with conducting feasibility studies for six additional facilities.
According to officials, MRI and CT scanners are proposed for District Headquarters hospitals in Charsadda, Haripur, and Karak. CT scanners are also planned for DHQ Hospital Upper Dir, Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Khwazakhela in Swat, and Mian Rashid Hussain Shaheed Memorial Hospital in Pabbi, Nowshera.
The Health Department initiated the process after receiving requests from hospital medical superintendents and district health officers. The hospitals said the absence of these diagnostic facilities was forcing patients to travel to other cities for MRI and CT examinations.
The Health Foundation will assess the local population, available infrastructure, and human resources to determine whether the proposed facilities require the equipment.
The feasibility report will be presented to the advisory and technical committees before being submitted to the foundation’s Board of Governors for final approval.
Health Foundation Managing Director Dr. Khizar Hayat said this would be the second phase of outsourcing diagnostic services in the province.
Under the first phase, DHQ hospitals in Kohat, Swat, Batkhela, and Malakand are set to receive both MRI and CT machines. THQ Hospital Takhtbai in Mardan and a Category-D hospital in Gara Tajik, Peshawar, will receive CT scanners, while Timergara DHQ Hospital will get an MRI machine.
Under the public-private partnership model, selected private partners will finance, install, operate, and maintain the MRI and CT facilities. They will also provide the required staff and offer diagnostic services at officially notified rates.
Dr. Hayat said the government would not spend money on purchasing or installing the machines but would monitor the services to ensure uninterrupted and quality care for patients.
