Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has directed the Private Schools Regulatory Authority (PSRA) to draft comprehensive safety regulations following the deadly school roof collapse in Peshawar’s Dir Colony.
According to a notification, the proposed rules will cover the structural safety of private school buildings, compliance with building codes, and regular safety inspections.
The regulations will also establish classroom capacity limits to prevent overcrowding. Schools’ emergency exits and procedures for evacuating students will form part of the proposed framework.
The PSRA has been instructed to consult relevant technical institutions while preparing the regulations. It must submit the draft and its recommendations to the Education Department within seven days.
The move follows the October 15 collapse at Al-Khair Education Center, which killed dozens of children and teachers and injured 52 people. Reported death tolls have varied.
Police previously arrested school owner Khan Muhammad over alleged construction defects. According to the FIR, school management failed to address complaints about deteriorating walls and roofs.
Muhammad attributed the collapse to rainfall, while education officials described the building as dilapidated.
The new regulations remain at the drafting stage. The seven-day deadline applies to submitting the proposed rules, rather than implementing them across private schools.
