Karachi University Removes Exams Controller Over Allegedly Passing Failed Students

The University of Karachi (KU) has removed Controller of Examinations Engineer Muhammad Yasir Khan following allegations that examination results were altered to declare more than 150 failed law students successful.

Associate Professor Ghufran Saeed from the Department of Food Science has been appointed as the new controller of examinations. A high-level committee is also being formed to investigate the alleged irregularities and identify those responsible.

The inquiry could lead to the cancellation of results for students found to have been passed through improper means.

According to the report, the alleged changes took place during the two-month tenure of former Vice Chancellor Tufail Jokhio, after the dean of the Faculty of Law submitted a written recommendation requesting scrutiny of students’ results.

With the approval of the acting vice chancellor, more than 150 students from SM Law College and Islamia Law College who had initially failed their examinations were reportedly declared successful through a scrutiny committee.

The changes involved BA and LLB examination results, including students who had failed in two subjects.

The process had previously been stopped by former permanent Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Iraqi.

Under university rules, students must submit individual applications for scrutiny. The annual examination system only allows marks to be recounted rather than answer scripts to be rechecked.

However, former Controller of Examinations Muhammad Yasir Khan denied that any students had been passed or failed through the process and declined to comment further.

Meanwhile, Dean of the Faculty of Law Barrister Sarfraz Mitlo defended the decision, saying the scrutiny committee was formed with the vice chancellor’s approval after concerns that students had been treated unfairly.

He said answer scripts were reexamined in the presence of the principals of both law colleges and the controller of examinations.

Mitlo maintained that no student who had received zero marks was declared successful and insisted that university rules permitted the reexamination of answer scripts.
