Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has directed authorities to prioritize underserved areas while issuing bus route permits as part of efforts to improve the city’s public transport system.
Naqvi issued the directive while chairing a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Board to review public transport services, traffic management, and commuter facilities across Karachi.
The meeting decided to revise the existing bus route policy to improve public transport and reviewed the proposed Karachi Mobility Project prepared by the Sindh Transport Department.
The commissioner instructed the RTA to align bus route permits with commuters’ transportation needs, with special focus on suburban areas that lack adequate public transport. He also directed authorities to discourage unnecessarily long-distance bus routes within the city to improve operational efficiency.
Officials informed the meeting that the computerization of traffic signals is underway at five major intersections. Work has already started at PIDC, Sindh Club (Metropole Hotel), and Avari Towers, while work at Teen Talwar and Boat Basin will begin soon.
The meeting was also informed that 12 of Karachi’s 16 previously non-functional traffic signals have been restored, while work on the remaining four is in progress.
